Round 12

I’ll be honest, I was initially reluctant about posting in December. Expecting people to indulge you in the last month of the year is like trying to hold a serious conversation with a drunk at a night club which plays loud music. So relax, this certainly won’t take long.

This time last year, I came out of a three-year hibernation. I jumped out of my cocoon energized like a wrestler who’d been tagged in by his partner, banging out copy after copy like a machine. However, at some point, just like in a wrestling match, I got knocked down. As I hit the deck, I quickly glanced at my corner only to realize there was no one in my corner who I could tag in to help me out.

It took me a while to accept that help would never come; my only savior will forever be the man in the mirror. It was either I dust myself up or continue lying flat in the ring. Somehow, I managed to get back to my feet and fight till the final bell. As you can see, I’m a bloody mess but alas! On two feet I stand.

Ever had a session with a shrink?

Shrinks walk with you on the path of self-discovery. The expectation is that a client will leave the therapy room having uncovered new truths about themselves and with a fresh outlook on life. For instance, once a client is done narrating how they feel life has done them dirty, the shrink will politely ask them if there’s anything, anything at all, that they’re grateful for? No doubt it’s an easy question to ask but one of the most difficult to answer, especially when you’re going through the wringer.

What I am most grateful for is you. Yes, you read that right… YOU!

I had it all wrong. All through, my conviction has been that the artist is the gift and the fans are the accessory. That the artist is superior to the fan. What this year has shown and taught me is that fans complete the artist. Without fans, no celebrity would be recognised.

Fans are incorruptible. You cannot rent let alone buy one; they naturally gravitate towards whom and what they love. An artist can attempt to dupe the fans but they will only be deceiving themselves. Fans hear, see and feel everything. Fans are god!

And like any deity, they wield the greatest power. They can give you a new lease of life or bury you alive. They can raise you from the dead or erect your gravestone. Fans reserve the right to refuse admission to rock-star heaven.

Blessed are those with die-hard fans, for the odds are forever in their favour.

I personally can’t wait for the day I get to share a meal, a pint and/or drugs with you as we listen to your playlist. I’d love to join you and the rest of the congregation as you gather for prayers at your place of worship. In whatever way, it will be a great honour to share an uplifting moment with you.

All I’m trying to say is, you’re worth suffering for. Thank you for showing up and showing out for my garage concert series. It wouldn’t be a party without you.

Happy holidays to you and yours.

See you on the other side.
